“On a wonderful trip to Zürich, I was struck by the intentional geometry of the paving stones in Sechseläutenplatz, Zürich’s largest open town square. Paving laid of gorgeous grey quartzite cut in variable-width strips creates an ever-changing textural perspective which inspired the gentle tapering ribs of this hat.” – Eric Lutz
We love this hat—a quick knit, an interesting design with options for modifications. And, like the Swiss and their four official languages, Zürich is available in four sizes!

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
Tiny / Baby, Small / Medium, Medium / Large, Medium / Large Slouch Circumference: measured at brim edge, when lightly stretched, therefore approx: 141⁄2 (181⁄2, 201⁄2, 24) ins / 37 (47, 52, 61) cm. Height: 6 (8, 8, 11) ins / 15 (20.5, 20.5, 28) cm
GAUGE:
21 1⁄2 sts and 27 rows = 4 ins / 10 cm
This pattern results in an extremely stretchy hat. Gauge really is more about creating a fabric you like and enjoy. So, while we wouldn’t recommend going upwards in needle size, moving downwards in needle size will result in a more tightly knit fabric that may result in additional wind blocking abilities, it will of course change the size produced.
To achieve the sizes indicated in the instructions you will need to work to the gauge indicated here. Take the time to check gauge and adjust needle size if necessary.
MATERIALS:
River City Yarns Epic Yarn; 194 m / 212 yds per 100 g ball; 100% Peruvian Highland Wool. Our samples are shown in three shades of Epic Yarn: 100 Ivory, 900 Silver, and 910 Steel. Note: River City Yarns Epic Yarn has been discontinued. For substitutions, we recommend Cascade 220 which is also a 100% Peruvian wool, for the closest fibre match. Alternatively, Berroco Ultra Wool or Rowan Pure Wool Worsted would also be good matches if you would like a superwash wool substitution.
