Get your game on with Gridiron: tough socks that aren’t so tough to knit!
For our very first football-inspired socks, we turned to sock quarterback, Kate Atherley. After a brief huddle, Kate came up with a design that so reminded us of a football field, we just had to nickname it: Gridiron. There’s a first down worth of sizes, too: 10 sizes (from age 3 to men’s XL) included in this pattern. The slip stitch pattern blitzes and blocks down the field to create vertical stripes with a variegated yarn. And the Dutch/ Square heel is a perfect play that provides reinforcement as well as a perfect fit. Touchdown!
We used Ancient Arts Touchdown; 557 yds / 510 m per 5oz / 150g skein; 80% superwash wool, 20% nylon. Touchdown has been dyed to produce a colour sequencing that works well with the stitch pattern. Yarn substitutions may not give the desired effect. The generous (150g) skein means you can make more than one pair of socks! The 68-stitch sample used about 40g, so you can easily make an adult and a kid’s pair from one skein. Our sample is knit in colour Calgary.
