Live Online Chats with Engaging Creators

Fiberside Chats are one-hour online (Zoom) sessions with special guests, giving us a peek into their world. These designers and creators will discuss their unique path, creative processes, latest projects—or whatever is inspiring them now. There will also be a Q&A session, giveaways, and other fun surprises for those who join! The gatherings are organized and hosted by our friends at Longmont Yarn Shoppe. The registration fee for each chat is only $20 USD and the proceeds support the guests and participating yarn shops such as ours.

Sunday, April 21, 2024: Setting Goals for Improving our Knitting and Crocheting Techniques! with Carson Demers

Here we are, ready for a springtime Fiberside Chat with Carson Demers! How have you grown as a knitter since the beginning of this year? Do you have a plan for growth and knitting sustainability for years to come? One thing Carson Demers is fairly sure of, is that none of us is resolved to stop knitting. Let’s chat about setting achievable goals for growth toward improving our technique, and personal sustainability. Join Carson to set yourself up for a comfortable lifetime of knitting!

Carson Demers is a physical therapist with 30-years’ experience. He has been knitting even longer. He became interested in ergonomics when a set of computing related injuries left him temporarily unable to treat patients or knit. Ergonomics, especially as it relates to textile arts has been his passion ever since. Carson has written and published the preeminent book on ergonomics for knitters and fiber enthusiasts, Knitting Comfortably: The Ergonomics of Handknitting which is available at www.ergoiknit.com and yarn shops around the world. He has taught classes to knitters, crocheters, spinners, weavers and other textile enthusiasts for 15-years at major knitting events, fiber retreats and festivals, yarn shops, guilds throughout North America. Carson has contributed articles to numerous fiber and crafting magazines and been a consultant to writers at Martha Stewart Living and other publications. His passion and experience in fiber arts combine with his expertise in physical therapy and ergonomics to create a unique skill set that he eagerly shares with the fiber community.

Sunday, May 5, 2024: Finishing Finesse with Ann Budd

Finishing Finesse! Through more than 50 years of knitting, which included editing and writing knitting books, Ann Budd has a number of tips and tricks to ensure her knitted projects have a professional look. In this class Ann will share some of her favorites for casting on, binding off, joining a new ball of yarn, counting rows, picking up stitches along necklines and heel flaps, and weaving in ends. Although this is not a class on seaming, you will learn Ann's favorite way to prepare knitted pieces for seaming.

Ann Budd is an author of more than a dozen ever popular knitting books, a devoted teacher who helps other develop their own approach to knitting and designing. A current passion of Ann’s is helping raise awareness around Alzheimer’s Disease and the fight against it, as more of her friends and family become victims. Sunday, May 19, 2024: Cultural Craft - Melding Traditions with Creativity by Francoise Danoy

 We are thrilled to invite you to an enriching Fiberside Chat with Francoise Danoy! This lecture takes attendees on a journey through the crossroads of cultural preservation and artistic innovation, using Maaori art forms as a lens. The world of fiber arts is vast, with an intricate tapestry of traditions and techniques passed down through generations. But how do we ensure that these traditions are preserved while allowing space for personal creativity? Register now and weave your thread into the ongoing tapestry of fiber arts.

Francoise Danoy (Ngaati Porou), is a Franco-Maaori American Australian fiber artist and creative business coach who lives in San Antonio, Texas. Françoise’s work as a knitwear designer and punch needle artist are most noted for their intricate designs, use of color, texture, and pattern. Her designs often tell deeply personal stories of her experiences as a diaspora Maaori that resonate and connect with audiences worldwide.

Sunday, June 30, 2024: Fair Isle Knitting! with Jennifer Daley

Join Jennifer Daley on an extraordinary adventure through the textile history and color of Fair Isle knitting. Jennifer will discuss her journey to Fair Isle, Scotland, the historic birthplace of Fair Isle knitting. She will unveil the evolution of Fair Isle knitting, Shetland wool, historic motifs or patterns, color theory, and knitting techniques specific to Fair Isle knitting. This fun and informative Fiberside Chat will integrate traditional Fair Isle knitted fisherman’s keps, designed by Jennifer as Knitting Jenny. Fisherman’s keps are caps or hats of conical shape and colourful design that were once considered a necessity for survival at sea for fishermen and sailors. Today they are an entertaining and interesting way to display the knitter’s skill for design and color. Please join us for this special presentation of Fair Isle knitting!

Dr. Jennifer Daley is a university professor, textile historian, and knitwear designer. Since 2005, Jennifer has been sharing her knitting journey at www.KnittingJenny.com. In April 2022, she moved to the Shetland Islands, Scotland, to continue her research into the history of Shetland wool and Fair Isle knitting. In the Shetland capital of Lerwick, Jennifer managed the day-to-day operations of the Shetland Textile Museum, where she also researched the history of the Shetland knitting industry, handknitting techniques, and tools specific to Shetland. In November 2022, Jennifer moved to the remote Scottish island of Fair Isle, the historic birthplace of Fair Isle knitting. In 2023, from her knitting design studio there, Jennifer launched The Knitting Jenny Pattern Series, celebrating creativity and colorful wool projects inspired by Fair Isle of the Shetland Islands, Scotland.

  • Registration fees must be paid in advance to hold your seat.
  • Registrations will close 3 hours before the event starting time.
  • You will receive an online invitation and meeting identification code that you will need, from Longmont Yarn Shoppe in order to enter the event. This invitation will come within 24 hours of the event.
  • As this is an online event, you need to have Zoom downloaded on a computer, tablet or mobile device. If using a computer, make sure you also have a webcam and microphone built in or attached.
  • Refunds? Sorry, there are no refunds if you forget to sign in or cannot attend.
  • Date Changes or Cancellations: in the event the Fiberside Chat has to be cancelled due the the Guest not being able to attend, Longmont Fibers will make the best effort possible to immediately accommodate a new date. All participant registrations will be valid for the new date. In the event an alternative date is not available your registration will be refunded in full.
