Socks on Straight Needles? No way! (Yes, way.)

Calling all sock knitters! Holli Yeoh is teaching a new and innovative method for knitting socks! Holli's latest sock pattern, "Easy Over Socks", caught our attention with all of it's opportunities to play. Use different yarns for the top and bottom of your sock, add reinforcement yarn only on the bottom, work on two straight needles, and a short row heel that provides plenty of room and keeps your shortie socks from falling off!

This knit flat sock is perfect for first time sock knitters and is a game changer for experienced sock knitters. Working back and forth on two straight needles, you will learn how to create a join-friendly selvedge on the top half of your sock, work shadow wrap short rows, join-as-you-go for the underside of the sock, a bifurcated heel for better fit and have an opportunity to try two different yarns to create the cutest shortie sock ever.

In class, you will work on a sample size sock in worsted weight yarn. You'll learn all the techniques and finish a large toddler / small child size sock. Yarniversity will purchase a copy of Holli's Over Easy Socks for each participant so you can cast on and use your new skills and techniques to work on an adult size sock for yourself!

Join us for two, 2-hour sessions (4 hours of instruction time) on Thursdays: December 5 and 12 starting at 11:00 am PST, 12:00 pm MST, 1:00 pm CST and Saskatchewan, 2:00 pm EST, 3:00 pm AST.

Please Bring

Here are some things that you will need to knit a sample sock in class along with Holli. Your first sock may fit a small child / toddler so Holli has included enough yardage to make a pair.

  • Worsted weight yarn in two colours (choose lighter colours for easier visibility)
    MC (instep) 30 yd / 25 m
    CC (heel/toe/sole) 75 yd / 70 m
  • 3.5mm (US 4) needles, your preference of straight, dpns, or circular. If you're a loose knitter go down a size; if you're a tight knitter, go up a size.
  • 2 stitch markers
  • 8 locking stitch markers
  • Your usual knitter's notions like measuring tape, scissors and darning needle.

Skill Level

You should be able to knit, purl, cast on and bind off—advanced beginner.
