What is a Yarnicorn? Well, it’s a mystical and wonderfully unique yarn that you simply can’t find anywhere else. It’s crafted by one-of-a-kind dye artists, often local, and always Canadian. And once it’s gone, it’s gone. 2022 will be the last year of the Flash Mob series and every month during 2022, on the 20th day at 6:00 PM Mountain Time, you will be able to order on our website, a one of a kind, unique and special Yarnicorn colourway to cherish. Something like a unicorn.

Unicorns are said to have healing powers. Well, the Yarnicorn will contribute to the aid of local citizens. Each month, a portion of sales will go towards a different Charity or organization. And in each month of 2022, Barb and Cynthia will use one skein of Yarnicorn to make a square for a "Memories" blanket that they will auction off for charity at the end of 2022.

The Yarnicorn colourway for March is called "One in a Million" and when we think about special hand painted yarns, we think of the remarkable work done by Canada's own Trailhead yarns in Ottawa. Dyer Samantha, has been dyeing plant based yarns and threads since 2013 after a life changing wool allergy had her looking for plant based yarns like cotton, linen, and tencel. Perfecting her techniques over the years, Trailhead yarns is meeting the growing demand for sustainably sourced plant-based yarns for those who have allergies, live in warmer climates, want to wash and wear, and want to use vegan yarns.

Dyeing on plant based fibres can be challenging, and yet, Samantha has created not one but four colours on Applalachian Trail, her fingering weight cotton and nylon blend yarn.

Inspired by a photo of lush green fields and wild poppies at various stages of bloom, Sam also tells us, "The "One in a Million" name also made me think of green fields and looking for the rare four leaf clover. These skeins are dyed using a special technique that gives us a lot of depth. As I dye I add different speckles depending on what it needs to get the depth I’m going for."

You can choose from two different sizes: Sam has dyed "One in a Million" on large 100 gram skeins and has also made Mini Sets - a set of three 20 gram skeins in tonal shades of pinks she calls Ballet Slipper, Shrimp and Flamingo. We call them "Wild Poppy Minis".

Pattern Suggestions:

Appalachian Trail has a soft and smooth hand, and shows off cables and lace patterns very well. One skein will make a pair of socks and if summer tees are on your make list right now, Trailhead has a simple pattern for the Labrador Tee, using one or two skeins of fingering weight Appalachian Trail cotton plus a set of minis. 100% of sales of this pattern goes to Legacy of Hope Foundation.

Consider joining Barb and Cynthia in making The Yarnicorn Memories Blanket, a "modular" (join as you go) blanket inspired by their Gramma Tutton, who crocheted lap blankets for all of her grandchildren, in a similar way. As you cuddle under your blanket, you can remember all the beautiful Yarnicorns you used in your blanket. Download the free pattern and watch videos of Barb and Cynthia making their blankets on Podcast On! Barb and Cynthia are using shades from the Camp Color line to provide contrast next to their hand-painted "One in a Million" colourway.

Last but not least Cynthia found this great baby blanket on ravelry, Colourful Wedges Baby Blanket by Purl Soho  (You will need 2 sets of the mini skeins)

Charitable Donations:

$2 from the sale of every skein and mini set of Yarnicorn this month will go to Trailheads favourite charity called Art For Aid who collects and distributes art supplies to Indigenous northern school groups. Please contact them directly if you are able to donate.

Note about hand painted yarns: These skeins are dyed by hand and may vary in colour and/or intensity from skein to skein, even within the same dye lot. Colours viewed on different monitors may have shade and tone differences from the actual product.
