Learn from a Pro (no homework involved)
Every Saturday, we're hosting one fav designer on Zoom for a 60 minute seminar on a topic of interest. Our guest will have the floor for 30 - 45 minutes to talk about the topic and we'll spend the rest of the time in discussion format. The best part of all is that you don't have to leave your home and there's no homework! Our guest will share swatches, designs, photos, and demos with you as well as answer your questions about projects and techniques.
Fiona Ellis: Sat, Oct 24 from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm MDT. Fiona will help us understand how to choose colour combinations that work well together, in particular for stranded colourwork, but with all kinds of other applications as well. If you have questions about colour, please forward them to email@example.com and we'll get them answered!
Ann Budd: Matching Cast-Ons and Bind-Offs, Sat, Oct 31 from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm MDT. Learn three stable, elastic cast-ons and their matching bind-offs. Armed with these techniques, you can get the same look at the cuff of socks knitted from the toe up or top down, the hem and neck edges of sweaters, and the two ends of scarves. Techniques include Crochet Chain Cast-On/Standard Bind-Off; Invisible (Tubular) K1, P1 Rib Cast-On/Invisible (Tubular) K1, P1 Rib Bind-Off; Channel Island Cast-On/Channel Island Bind-Off. Illustrated handouts of the various techniques will be provided.
Erika Knight: Designs (and tips) for cozy, home knits, Sat, Nov 7 from 10:00 - 11:00 am MST. Join Barb and Cynthia in welcoming Erika Knight to our Sunday Seminar series! Erika is a knit and crochet designer from the UK. Her recent passion for staying-at-home knits can be seen in the new Rowan Magazine 68 where Erika's designs are featured in the collection: Homewear; "A celebration of tactile familiarity, with designs that are warm, favourite and made to be lived in." Erika will talk about the inspirations for the designs and the details that make each of these pieces so individual and unique. You will be inspired to immediately pick up your needles and start knitting something cozy for yourself or your home! Erika doesn't let any bit of yarn go to waste, either. Rowan has gifted us with a copy of her adorable slipper pattern, "Drowsy" from Magazine 68, which you'll download with your registration. Knit the soles in advance of the seminar and Erika will explain how to add the upper and her nifty trick for attaching the two pieces together. Erika will also demonstrate "duplicate stitch" for signature embellishments. Register now!
Caroline Sommerfeld: the Journey behind the Journey Shawl, Sat, Nov 14 from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm MST. Oh boy! This is going to be good. More details coming soon.
Kate Atherley: Custom Shawls - tips and tricks for great shawls, Sat, Nov 21 from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm MST. Join us for a Saturday Seminar with Kate Atherley where she will show you some of the unique aspects of her new book, co-authored with Kim McBrien Evans: "Custom Shawls for the Curious and Creative Knitter". Bring along your yarn and needles and cast on with Kate as she demos how to start with a garter stitch tab. You can go on to work a few rows in a clever adjusted triangle construction as Kate talks a little about the "recipes and formulas" for all the classic shawl shapes. We'll finish off the mini shawl-swatch with a beautiful, easy and practical crocheted bind-off. This book is amazing! River City Yarns has already sold out on our first order. Send an email to Cynthia and we'll get you on the order list for the next batch. If time permits, we may get a brief preview of Kate's Outlander book!
Holli Yeoh: Setting in a Sleeve, Sat, Dec 5 from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm MST. Setting in a sleeve is something that scares a lot of people but it's not all that difficult. You just need to have Holli guide you through ow to do a few different kinds of seams. And she will!
Kate Atherley: No Knots in Knitting? Perhaps Knot! Sat, Dec 12 from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm MST. How do you join in a new yarn in your knitting project? Bring up the topic at your local knitting group and you can get into some heated discussions! Kate Atherley will show you that there is a time for knots and how to make a knot that will work. She will also show us how to get out of "knotty" difficulties with alternative methods such as spit splicing, Russian joins and other clever methods. And, she'll "debunk" the "just drop the old yarn and pick up the new one" advice that Cynthia loves to give. She's going to give all the methods a try and we think you should, too! A small materials list will be provided at registration in case you want to knot-a-long.
