A hat is a simple gift. It doesn't take much yarn and it doesn't take much time. But it's so worthy! It keeps the warmth in. And, on your head, it can make a visible statement. Right now, a worthy project is to knit and wear a hat that shows our support for those who are caught up in the invasion of Ukraine.

We are offering this hat pattern to you, for free and we're encouraging you to make a donation to support the humanitarian needs in Ukraine and the countries and people that are supporting and aiding Ukrainian refugees. Barb and Cynthia are donating to the Canadian Red Cross as part of their Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal.

Our original sample (pictured in blue) was worked in Rhichard Devrieze Fynn (100% superwash Merino, 70g/160m per skein) in a three colour fade. While the pattern was written for a worsted weight gauge, we think this hat would work up nicely in a DK weight or a Fingering weight (double stranded). The pattern is written for three sizes: Child (Adult S, Adult M/L) and is intended to be worn with 1-2 inches of negative ease.

Hat circumference: 15 (19, 23) in / 38 (48.25, 58.5) cm
Hat length: 8 (9, 11 )in / 20.5 (23, 28)cm

Yarn Requirements:

Worsted/DK weight: approximately 45g (55g, 70g) or 105m (125m, 160m). Sample shown in Rhichard Devrieze Fynn (100% superwash merino, 70g/160m per skein).

Fingering Weight (held double throughout): approximately 45g (55g, 70g) or 210m (250m, 320m).

This hat pattern would be a nice way to create the effect of a sunflower (the national flower of Ukraine). We also like the idea of using the colours of the Ukrainian flag in this hat. We just want to show our love and support for those who are fleeing from and fighting for their homes. Here are some of the yarn combinations we think would work for these ideas:

Sunflower Combo: we've selected shades from the Camp Color lines to create a 3-colour fade that would work from the dark centre out. In this top down hat, we imagine Cask Strength from Stirred Not Shaken in the centre, then Jackalope from Beware the Kraken and a nice bright finish with Hype Sticker from the High Fidelity collection

Flag of Ukraine Combo: we found two great colours, again, in the Camp Color Line. We've paired Gimme Some Sugar from Sweet Tooth with Hype Sticker from the High Fidelity collection

We like this one as a possible Sunflower, too. Cozy is dyed by Yarns of Rhichard Devrieze. This is a two-skein bundle: one stippled skein called "Bountiful" and one semi-solid called "Honey Gold". Each skein has 100g / 373 yd, and are a blend of 80% superwash Merino, 10% cashmere and 10% nylon.

And if you prefer working one strand instead of a double strand, consider the RCY Eden combination of River and Myrrh. These two colours would work to share inspiration from the flag of Ukraine.
