River City Yarns is partnering with Longmont Yarn Shoppe to create an opportunity to raise funds in support of the humanitarian needs of Ukrainians. We started out with 20 yarn kits and a pattern donation by Sarah Schira of Imagined Landscapes. Thanks to you, we raised $1,180 (20 x $59) for the Canadian Red Cross. We're going to keep it up! We've made a few changes, including the price point, to this kit - so keep reading to see how you can participate in this ongoing fundraiser.

Longmont Yarn Shoppe (Colorado) has 2 kit options: Freedom for Ukraine Gnome Kit - Knit and Freedom for Ukraine Gnome Kit - Crochet. Longmont will be donating to Doctors Without Borders, earmarked for Ukraine.

Our kit is a bit different. It's a yarn kit - so you can pair it up with a knit or crochet pattern of your choosing. It includes 3 colours of River City Yarns Epic Yarn. We've used our kit to make the Never Not Gnoming Gnome by designer Sarah Schira of Imagined Landscapes. We'll continue to donate $15 from each of these yarn kits to the Canadian Red Cross Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal.

Thank you for your compassion and support of the urgent humanitarian needs of people of Ukraine.

Kit Details:

  • 1 x 100 g / 3.5 oz ball of Epic in Faded Denim (194 m / 212 yds), 100% Peruvian Highland Wool
  • 1 x 100 g / 3.5 oz ball of Epic in Harvest Gold (194 m / 212 yds), 100% Peruvian Highland Wool
  • 1 x 50 g / 2.75 oz skein of Epic in Natural (100 m / 109 yds) 100% Peruvian Highland Wool
If you want to make a knitted gnome like we did, you will also need:
  • One of Sarah Schira's gnome patterns:  Imagined Landscapes on Ravelry
  • 3.75 mm / US 5 knitting needles for working a small circumference in the round. You will need double pointed needles or Flexi-Flips to make i-cord. Note: these gnome patterns may be written for a fingering weight yarn and we made ours in a worsted weight, using larger needles. No changes/modifications were made to the pattern instructions.
  • Stuffing
  • toothpick and dab of glue for flag
  • Flag instructions:  With yellow yarn cast on 7 stitches using long tail cast on. Knit 3 rows in garter stitch. Switch to blue yarn. Knit 3 rows in garter stitch and bind off.  Weave in ends. Weave toothpick along edge and insert in place. A small dab of glue will keep the flag in place. Let your gnome wave that flag!
