On Sunday, June 19th, our dear friend Ann Budd, will knit from sunrise (somewhere around 5:00 am) to sunset (somewhere around 9:00 pm) Mountain Daylight Time in support of Alzheimer's. Ann has designed a brand new cowl pattern called the Fading Memories Cowl and when you purchase this pattern, Ann will donate $5 USD to Alzheimer's research.
"The stitch pattern consists of expanding cables separated by eyelet lace that represents convoluted memories and lost awareness. The dark-to-light gradient represents how those afflicted with Alzheimer’s become ghosts of their former selves.
We're joining Ann, along with four other fabulous yarn shops, to turn this day into a fun knit-a-long (KAL). We want you to come along too. Register here; it's free!. There are prizes! Here at River City Yarns, we're supporting Ann by encouraging you to make a donation to her fundraising page. Make a donation of any size and Ann will contact you with an offer to download, for free, one of the six exclusive pattern designs published by River City Yarns.
What yarn should you use? Our colour gradient kits feature Italian made GGH Mussante - a beautiful blend of wool/viscose and angora & cashmere.
Ball Weight: 50 g / 1.764 oz
Ball Length: 150 m / 164.042 yds
Knitting Gauge: 20 sts = 10cm / 4"
Needle Size: 3.50mm - 4.50mm (US 4 - 7)
Yarn Fibre: 37% wool, 30% viscose, 20% polyamide, 8% angora, 5% cashmere
Care Instructions: Hand wash. Lay flat to dry.
Our kits come with three colours that you can use to do solid blocks of colour or blend those shades together to create a marled version of Ann's cabled cowl. Cynthia designed a row by row marl instruction sheet, and we've tucked a complimentary copy in each kit, as an addendum to Ann's pattern (you need to buy that separately). The effect of blending the colours was so much fun, we cast on right away for a second cowl.
- 3 x 50g balls of GGH Mussante, one each in colours 003 Lt Grey, 03 Medium Grey and 008 Red
- Addendum instruction for blending colours to create a marl/fade/gradient
You will also need:
- Ann's Fading Memories Cowl pattern - $5 is donated to Alzheimer's research
- 3.5 mm (US size 4) 16 inch circular needles or size to obtain gauge (see pattern for gauges) Exact gauge isn't crucial but will affect the size and drape of the cowl.
Note about yarns from our website: Photographs aren't perfect; they don't capture the texture and feel of the yarn. Colours viewed on different monitors may have shade and tone differences from the actual product. If you would like assistance with selecting a colour or an opinion/advice on finding a good yarn for your project, please feel free to give us a call.
