Retail Store closing announcement

April 5, 2023

Barb and Cynthia of River City Yarns would like to announce that they are closing their bricks and mortar shop in Edmonton, Alberta, effective April 15, 2023. Our building has sold and rather than try to move, we decided this would be a good time to slow down.

We want you to know your friendship and support has kept us inspired and challenged and we’ve enjoyed being a part of your making journey.

We'll be having a moving out sale! Between February 15 and April 15, all of our physical goods will be on sale. Effective April 15, any remaining physical products, like yarns and notions and books, we will continue to sell online with delivery via Canada Post. And Barb and Cynthia will continue to remain active online, with a suite of digital products, services and events.

Can I come into the shop and buy product? If you would like to come in and purchase anything, we recommend that you order online. If you'd like to come in and see it before you buy it, call the shop at 780-477-9276, ext 5, and we'll set up an appointment for you.

I have an older gift card or "yarn stash cash". Can I use it online? Yes. If you have a gift card with a four digit number on it, you can use it online for payment. You will need to add four zeros to the front of that number, so that what you enter in the gift card payment section is eight digits long. For example, if your card has a number that we'll call "ABCD", you would enter: 0000ABCD. If you have yarn stash cash, there might be a six digit number on it and you'll need to add two zeros to the front of it. For example, if your yarn stash cash has a number that we'll call AB-CDEF, you would enter: 00ABCDEF. Contact Cynthia (see below) if you have questions about gift cards.

Where can I shop locally for yarn? New yarn shops and local dyers have opened up in Edmonton, Sherwood Park and St. Albert and we feel it is a good time to exit the local yarn market and allow more space for the new shops to grow. If you need recommendations for yarn shops, or shops that sell yarns you can't get locally, we'd be happy to make some suggestions. We've made friends with a lot of yarn shop owners over our 21 years in business.

How will I get more of your exclusive yarns? We encourage you to stock up now, while there is still a selection of our exclusive yarns. But when we run out, don't despair. Our special hand-dyed yarns Hat Trick and Touchdown will be available through Ancient Arts and Eden and Adam & Eve will be available through Handmaiden. Alternatives for RCY Epic and El Rio will be posted on our website.

Is River City Yarns going to continue? Yes. For as long as we have yarn to sell, we'll continue operating as River City Yarns. We're not restocking the physical products so when it's gone, it's gone. Over time, we may change the name of our business, but Barb and Cynthia will remain in place, offering you an opportunity to learn and connect with others. You'll still be able to find us at rivercityyarns.com and on our YouTube channel at podcaston.ca as well as on social media.

Barb and Cynthia are planning to continue working on the part of the business that you can't get elsewhere. Our virtual yarn shop will be a place that you come to, online, with your yarn already in hand. We'll continue to offer workshops, events and gatherings to help you develop your skills and keep you motivated.

Can I still buy physical products after April 15? Yes, for as long as we have them, you'll be able to purchase yarn, patterns, needles, notions, books and kits online. We'll deliver them to you through Canada Post or USPS. The only thing that's changing is that there will no longer be a curbside pickup option.

Will you still have curbside pickup after April 15? No, there will be no curbside pickup option after the 15th of April. You can, however, opt to have your goods delivered to your door by Canada Post.
