Always Better Together
River City Yarns Mystery Knit-Along 2021
This will give you all the information you need to get prepared for the MKAL. You will find yarn requirements, needle size, as well as helpful tips for choosing yarn.
Always Better Together is an asymmetrical triangular shawl knit sideways from the right tip to left edge. It is knit in sections of single colour and two-colour stitch patterns.
Measurements: Wingspan – 82”/208cm; Centre Depth – 28”/71cm. These measurements may vary with yarn choice and individual tension.
RECOMMENDED YARDAGE
You will need two contrasting colours:
-
Main Colour (MC) – 470m/514yds DK weight
Contrast Colour (CC) - Contrast Colour (CC) – 420m/460yds DK weight
Sample made with Rowan Summerlite DK (130m/142yds per 50g ball).
It used MC – 4 balls (430m) and CC – 3 balls (375m). These are exact amounts.
Although designed to be worked in two colours, the shawl looks equally beautiful in a single shade.
The shawl starts and ends with MC. MC can be light or dark.
One yarn must be distinctly darker than the other, how much darker is a personal choice. Select one light and one dark from the same colour family or two different colours. Contrast of colour is not enough, one yarn must be darker than the other.
GAUGE
21sts/29 rows = 4”/10cm in Stockinette Stitch after blocking with 4mm.
Exact gauge is not crucial but differences will alter yardage and finished measurements. Work gauge swatch in MC.
NEEDLES
4.0 mm (US 6) needle or size to obtain gauge.
Optional – One 4.0 mm (US 6) double pointed needle for bind off.
Interchangeable circular needles are recommended because you can change the cable length as the stitch count increases. You will need 60cm, 80cm and 100cm cables.
NOTIONS
Split markers, ring markers, scissors, tapestry needle and blocking equipment. A digital scale is optional, but very useful for shawl knitting.
