Love the look? How d'you do it?
Come and join Barb and Cynthia for a Knit-A-Long (KAL) this fall to try out some stranded colourwork. We'll be making the Colourwork Cowl and/or the Hugs & Kisses Hat, designed by Cynthia just for you!
This Knit-A-Long will take place on two Sundays: October 15 and 22, starting at 12:00 pm PDT, 1:00 pm MDT, 2:00 pm CDT, 3:00 pm EDT, 4:00 ADT.
In the first session, Cynthia will demonstrate how to work her favourite cast, the Tubular Cast on, and give you tips for working this cast on in the round. She'll also talk to you about reading a chart in the round and working those longer strands in the back without catching them up. You'll get this project off to a great start and feel motivated to work your way around and around!
In the second session, Cynthia will demonstrate the tubular bind off and answer questions about weaving in ends, blocking and fixing mistakes. We'll take some time for "show and share" and encourage everyone to continue on the journey of working with two stands of yarn at the same time!
The knit-a-long is free, but you will need a copy of the pattern(s) and some materials. You can purchase and download A Colourwork Cowl and/or the Hugs & Kisses Hat from our website. Please note, if you previously purchased the RCY Eden Colourwork Kit from us, you will have a printed copy of the cowl pattern, "Fair Isle Sampler Cowl" in the kit. Materials (are the same for either project but the hat requires one additional set of needles for the crown).

Yarn: we're using Handmaiden Eden (80% superwash Merino wool, 10% cashmere, 10% nylon; 120g / 195m) in four colours. 1 skein of Main Colour (MC) and approx 15g each of three Contrast Colours (CC1, CC2, CC3). You can substitute with an equivalent worsted weight yarn (we recommend wool or a wool blend). You'll need approximately 150 m/165 yards for the main colour and 18m/20yds each for the three contrast colours.
- Needles for the Cowl: 4.0mm (US 5), 40cm/16 in circular knitting needle (for ribbing); and 4.5mm (US 6), 40cm/16 in circular knitting needle (for colourwork) or size(s) required to achieve gauge. Note: you can use DPNs or Magic Loop for this project but we recommend a short circular to minimize stranding across needle "breaks".)
- Needles for the Hat: 4.0mm (US 5), 40cm/16 in circular knitting needle (for ribbing); and 4.5mm (US 6), 40cm/16 in circular knitting needle (for colourwork) and one set of 4.0mm (US 5) dpns, one long circ or two circs (hat crown) or size(s) required to achieve gauge. Note: you can use DPNs or Magic Loop for this project but we recommend a short circular for the brim and body of the hat to minimize stranding across needle "breaks".)
- Notions: One stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round and a tapestry needle to weave in ends.
