SPY:21 (Sock Projects for the Year 2021) is a secret agent themed knitalong (KAL) that runs throughout the year 2021. Our agents will knit socks each month based on patterns from the book: Operation Sock Drawer (book sold separately).
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to follow Barb and Cynthia each month and fill your drawers with brand new socks! Join Barb & Cynthia on Podcast On every month to find out the top-secret details about each month's sock project and tips and techniques to complete your mission. Post your photos on social media with #SPY21KAL so we can see them all!

Mission 9: Siddal. Designed by Cheryl Toy, these top-down socks have a pretty cable motif at the cuff, ankle, and toes. Cynthia is knitting these in two versions, with Manos Alegria, and with Trailhead Appalachian Cotton. Pick your favourite colour and make your own pair!
Mission 8: A Drawer Full. Designed by Becky Greene, these colourful socks are a tribute to the idea of "Operation Sock Drawer". You can have a drawer full of socks right on your socks! We've paired up Schachenmayr Regia in Rainbow with two shade of solids for you to choose from, in Zitron Trekking Sport or Regia 4Ply Solids.
Mission 7: Better Half. Designed by Nataliya Sinelshchikova uses Intarsia in the round to create a heart shape across your toes. Your mission kit includes two skeins of Ancient Arts Socknado base in colour combos perfect for you or The Spy Who Loved Me (1977). We've "hearted" these combos but you can choose your own using Ancient Arts Socknado and/or RCY Hat Trick Semi-Solid. Check out Cynthia's Ravelry page for her "mission notes" and link to a get started video.
Mission 6: Gentle Drizzle. Designed by Emily Kintigh, is featured in the book Operation Sock Drawer. Rib stitches are connected with a cable raindrop. We recommend Canada's own Trailhead Appalachian Cotton, one skein will make a pair of socks!
Mission 5: Funhouse. Designed by Lisa K. Ross, this eye-catching accessory combines stranded colourwork with self -striping yarn for an optical illusion that will keep your attention. Grounded by a solid cuff, heel and toe, the graphic design calls to mind the reflective mirrors of a funhouse. We are using Zitron Trekking XXL for the stripes and Trekking Sport Solids or Manos Alegria for the background colour. Order your custom colour combo individually or select one of our kit combos.
Mission 4: Meta. This fun sock, designed by Mary Hull, takes advantage of leftovers, as each band of colour takes about 4 yards/3.6 meters of sock yarn. To save some time managing all the ends, we used Bis-sock, our favourite hand-dyed self striper, from Biscotte in our custom colourway, Jasper Townsite and teamed it with Zitron's Trekking Sport for the main colour solid.
Mission 3: Meandros. Designed by Sandi Rosner, this top-down sock pattern features a fun to make Greek Key pattern, done in an easy mosaic (slipped stitch) pattern, with two contrasting colours of our all-time favourite sock yarn, Hat Trick Semi-Solid (80% merino, 20% nylon, 100 g / 3.5 oz, 352 m / 385 yds). Follow "Agent B", or create your own custom colour combo here.
Mission 2: Stained Glass. Want to start Mission 2? This lovely pattern (found on p. 20 of the book) is a stranded colourwork project worked as an ankle sock. A short sock needs less yarn, so we turned to Rhichard Devrieze Peppino (100% superwash Merino, 65g and 206 m per skein) for some lovely "pair-ings" of colour. Barb and Cynthia put together custom colour pairings for you or you can choose your own colours: one dark plus one light to make the stained glass "pop".
Mission 1: I Scream. Your first project, should you choose to knit it, will be to make these colourful ice cream inspired socks, designed by Caitlin Thomson, featured in the book Operation Sock Drawer. Each yarn kit contains one 100 gram skein and three 20 gram mini skeins of fingering weight merino nylon sock yarn dyed by Over the Moon Yarn, a local-to-us hand-dyer. Check out our review and interview on Podcast On Episode 48 and visit Cynthia's and Barb's Ravelry pages for notes on modifications.
